About this Single Origin Coffee

Baroida plantation consists of 230 Hectares of Mature Coffee Trees, amongst which you will find varieties such as Typica, Bourbon, Arusha and Mondonova. The coffee that we hand-pick, process and export from this Plantation is known and sold worldwide as BAROIDA.

Baroida Plantation, located in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, was founded by Ben Colbran, in the beginnings of the 1960s.

The name Baroida comes from an old traditional spirit that was believed to reside in a particularly large rock that lies in the middle of the river that runs through the lands of the plantation. The reason it was believed a spirit, is that even the largest river floods could not move this one rock, even when all other stones and rocks were washed away.

Ben Colbran first purchased the land from a Native Man named Taro. They started working the land and making it productive for the future. The first cultivation that took place in these hilly valleys was of various types of vegetables which were transported to the city of Lae, where a good market price was offered.

Later, in 1965, the government in place encouraged the early settlers of the highlands to start growing coffee, as a long-term sustainable economic and agriculture activity for the country.

This is the path Baroida Plantation took and started growing the coffee trees that nowadays produce the high-quality coffee with the great taste that sets it apart from the rest.

As the spirit of Baroida, The Colbran Family is now a third generation affair that has remained in the area building the coffee culture and creating new markets to better the livelihood of the local tribes that live here.
