About our June Coffee of the Month
Big, bold and juicy, Kenyan AA is full of high impact ripened dark fruits and a refined acidity; the hallmark characteristic of this unique origin.
We’re kicking off the fresh crop season with a AA lot from our nearest and dearest relationship – the farmers society of Thirikwa Gakuyuini.
We visited Nairobi again in February to source our lots for the year. We spent three straight days blind tasting coffees from all over Kenya before finally settling on our favourite, which, lo and behold, was once again from Thirikwa.
This is the fourth year running that we’ve featured Thirikwa as Coffee of the Month and we think this is their best work yet. We’ve tracked their meteoric rise from humble beginnings all the way to breaking the record for the highest price paid at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange.
Along with a commitment to quality and attention to detail, the success of Thirikwa is founded on the level of care accorded to their members. They are amongst the highest paying societies in Kenya with at least 95% of revenue returned to members. A revolving fund also ensures assistance for medical and school fees for all members.
Social Good in Kenya
A tractor was funded to deliver coffee from the farms to the plant, and we renovated hundreds of coffee drying beds and other equipment. In 2 years, the quality of the coffee has increased dramatically, almost doubling their price and tripling the output.
